What We Replace
Few staircases in a lived-in house are square, so we measure each tread by itself. That care makes the new steps fit the house they are in.
Treads and risers
We cover the existing stairs with new hardwood treads and risers. Carpeted or builder-grade steps turn into solid wood while the frame underneath stays in place. We match species, stain and sheen to your floors.
Newel posts
These are the heavy posts at the foot, head and turns of the railing. Trading an old post for a square, tapered or box newel changes the look of the whole staircase.
Spindles
Spindles, or balusters, can go from old wood to new wood or wrought iron. We can change them by themselves and leave the steps alone.
Handrails
New rail shapes, rails fixed to the wall and continuous rails that follow the landing, stained to match the treads or set off in a contrast colour.
Nosings, stringers and landings
These trim pieces tie the treads, walls and landing together so the stairs look like one piece of work.
Matching floors
We match stain and sheen to the flooring at the top and bottom, herringbone and wide plank included, so the stairs belong to the house around them.

Step 4When the treads and parts arrive, the crew starts on the stairs. You can still use them at night and while we work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does stair repair or refinishing cost?
We price loose, squeaky or damaged treads after we see them, since the same squeak can come from different causes. Every quote is fixed in writing after a free visit to measure.
Can you turn carpeted stairs into hardwood?
Yes. We cap the existing steps with new hardwood treads and risers, so nothing gets torn out. Before you call, lift the carpet at the top step. If you find solid hardwood in good condition, refinishing may be the better route, and we will tell you which suits your stairs.
Should I refinish my stairs or recap them?
Look at what they are made of. Sound solid hardwood can be refinished. Pine, particleboard, painted or damaged steps get recapped.
How long will the crew be in the house?
Plan on three to four days for a flight, and the same for a flight with a landing. We confirm the dates in writing, and you can use the stairs overnight and while we work, so the upstairs stays within reach.
Do you replace spindles and handrails as well?
Yes. We fit newel posts in square, tapered or box styles, spindles in wood, wrought iron or glass, and new handrails, including rails fixed to the wall and continuous rails around a landing. We quote spindle jobs and handrail jobs on their own.
Can you put carpet on my stairs?
No, we don’t install carpet. If carpet is part of the plan, we will tell you at the first visit so you can find the right trade.
